Why have a
Website?
A survey published by the RNIB
in November 1997 found "43% of the public were unaware of the health
purpose of an eye examination."
The major reason
cited for having an eye test was - 'failing eyesight'.
The RNIB believes
many people have undetected sight loss and eye disease.
The International
Glaucoma Association estimates only 50% of glaucoma is being detected
while the British Diabetic Association believes that the ratio of
undiagnosed to diagnosed cases maybe as high as 1:1.
At the same time
RNIB patient focus groups have highlighted the great need for better
patient communication by the profession.
"I think it would
help if you were told what the results were."
"I would like
them to explain what they are doing and why."
Eye Style and
Savaspex Opticians want to play a part in educating the general public
about the crucial role regular routine eye examinations play in the
early detection and treatment of many medical conditions. There are
several conditions, systemic and ocular, which initially show no symptoms
but which can be detected in a routine sight test at a very early
stage, in time for treatment and thereby preventing serious problems
later on. Glaucoma and diabetes are two examples.
There is no better
medium today than the world wide web for raising and tackling such
issues.
